RACE Reading Test Practice, Grades 3–5: Paired Passages Set
Your students can read the passage. Then the test asks them to write about it, and the answer comes back as one short line.
"Because it said so."
No restating. No evidence. No explaining. They lose points on a question they actually understood.
Constructed response is often where reading scores slip on state tests. It isn't that kids can't think. They just don't have a routine they trust when the box is blank and the clock is running.
Parents see it too. Homework says "use evidence from the text," and nobody at the kitchen table is sure what a good answer looks like.
A routine they can carry into the test
RACE gives kids four steps, the same every time:
- R – Restate the question in your own words.
- A – Answer every part of the question.
- C – Cite evidence from the text.
- E – Explain how the evidence supports your answer.
This pack is practice with that routine. Kids read a short passage, answer a prompt with RACE, and check their work. You get an answer key, so you're not grading from scratch.
What's inside
- 2 paired sets (4 passages): How a Lighthouse Works with The Keeper’s Long Night (informational), and Amara’s Scarf with the poem The Oak Is in No Hurry
- 6 constructed-response prompts. Two questions are about one passage each. The last question in each set asks about both passages.
- A RACE anchor page that walks through one modeled answer, step by step (page 7)
- A "Plan it with RACE" organizer on every practice question, with extra-wide writing lines for grades 3–5 handwriting
- An answer key with a sample answer that scores a 4, a sample that scores a 2, a one-line fix for the 2, and the key text evidence for every question
- RACE toolkit pages (RACE in one page, modeled answer, question-stem decoder, teacher and kid rubrics), a progress tracker, and cut-out RACE bookmarks
- 30 pages · printable PDF · US Letter
Good for:
- Test-prep warm-ups in the weeks before state testing
- Small groups and intervention
- Homework and at-home practice
- Sub plans: print and go, no prep
